What is DCR?
Dacryocystorhinostomy, or DCR, is a surgery used to treat blocked tear ducts in adults. This process creates a new passageway between the tear duct sac and the nose, bypassing the blockage and allowing tears to drain naturally.
Types of DCR:
There are two types of procedures for DCR. Our doctors will discuss with you which one is the most suitable option for you. The two types of DCR procedures include:
- External DCR: This is the most common surgery to cure blocked tear ducts. A small incision is made on the side of the nose to gain access to the tear sac. A small amount of bone is removed between the tear sac and the nose. A new passage is made for the tear to go down, and some flexible tubes are placed there to keep it open. The tubes are removed usually after 6-8 weeks after the surgery.
- Endoscopic DCR: This process includes using a telescope to look up the nose and locate the blockage site, which is then surgically opened. A flexible tube is inserted and removed after six to eight weeks to keep the passage open.
The Need for a DCR:
Generally, the tears which wash over the eye drain away through a system that runs from the corner of your eye to the inside of your nose. If there is a blockage in this system, the eye cannot start watering, and you might become prone to infections. In such a case, you might require DCR.
Your tear draining passages will be assessed by our doctors by syringing salty water in the tear ducts to find out the location and the quantity of the blockage.
Before the surgery, our doctor might ask you to do a general health checkup, blood test, and sometimes ECG to ensure your health is good enough for the surgery.
What can you Expect After DCR?
Immediately after the operation, you might experience little discomfort and some spot of blood from the nose. In general cases, you can go home on the very day of the surgery.
Our doctor will prescribe you eye drops or ointment for two weeks to prevent infection.
You need to visit us after six to eight weeks for the removal of the tube after surgery.
