What is Tinnitus?
Tinnitus is described as a ringing in the ears.
Tinnitus may sound like clicking, roaring, hoarsing, buzzing.
Tinnitus involves perceiving sound even in the absence of external noise. The sound can be either high-pitched or low-pitched.
Some people hear it in one ear only, and others listen to it in both the ears.
People with severe Tinnitus will have problems in hearing, sleeping, or working.
- Tinnitus is a sign that indicates something is wrong in your auditory system. (includes your ear, the auditory nerve that connects the inner ear to the brain, and the parts of the brain that process sound)
- Ringing in ears or buzzing in ears.
- Tinnitus occurs either on one ear or on both sides.
- Ringing occurs either continuously or intermittently.
What are the Causes of Tinnitus?
Inner hair cells get damaged by noise exposure, ototoxic drugs, or Meniere's disease.
What are the Symptoms of Tinnitus?
- Ringing in ears.
- Buzzing in ears.
- Hissing in ears.
- Roaring in ears.
Types of Tinnitus?
There are two kinds of Tinnitus, they are:
Subjective Tinnitus
- In subjective Tinnitus, you can hear.
- Subjective Tinnitus is the most common type of Tinnitus.
- Subjective Tinnitus occurs due to problems in your outer ear, middle ear, inner ear.
- Subjective Tinnitus occurs due to issues with the auditory(hearing) nerves.
Objective Tinnitus
- Objective Tinnitus is a rare type of Tinnitus due to blood vessel problems, middle ear bone condition, or muscle contractions.
What is the Treatment for Tinnitus?
Removal of ear wax: Removing impacted earwax can decrease symptoms of Tinnitus.
Treating underlying blood vessel condition: Treatment of underlying vascular disorders reduces the symptoms of Tinnitus.
Noise suppression
Using the following electronic devices can make your Tinnitus less bothersome. The devices are;
White noise machines.
White noise machines that produce simulated environmental sounds such as falling rain or ocean waves are often an effective treatment for Tinnitus.
Hearing aids. Hearing aids are used if you have hearing problems, including Tinnitus.
Masking devices. Masking devices are worn in the ear and are similar to hearing aids. Masking devices produces a continuous, low-level white noise that helps to suppress tinnitus symptoms.
Tinnitus retraining. A device is worn, which helps to set specific frequencies. Counseling is also a part of Tinnitus retraining.
Medications for Tinnitus:
In general, drugs can't cure Tinnitus, but in some cases, medication may help to reduce the severity of symptoms or complications. Possible remedies include the following:
Tricyclic antidepressants, such as amitriptyline and nortriptyline, are used only for severe Tinnitus.
Alprazolam (Xanax) may help reduce Tinnitus symptoms, but side effects can include drowsiness and nausea.
CAROVERINE FOR TREATMENT OF Tinnitus
- Caroverine is used as a spasmolytic drug.
- Because of a limited uptake with oral administration, caroverine is administered intravenously.
- Local administration of caroverine on the round window membrane (RWM) could be a more effective means of administration to avoid systemic side/adverse effects.
- Local application of caroverine on the Round Window Membrane to treat excitotoxicity-related inner ear diseases.
- Caroverine is used to treat conditions of the ear, such as Tinnitus and noise- induced hearing loss.
- Caroverine is safe and more productive while avoiding high blood and CSF caroverine levels seen with systemic administration.
STEROID SUPPLY FOR TINNITUS:
DEXAMETHASONE :
- Dexamethasone is a potent steroid in the treatment of Tinnitus.
- Injecting steroids (Dexamethasone) helps in the reduction of symptoms of Tinnitus.
