What is Lobuloplasty?

An ENT specialist treats damaged or torn ear lobes surgically by a procedure called Lobuloplasty. This is a preferred treatment for all types of ear lobes deformities and defects.

Common ear deformities include gauged earlobes, ear lobe tears (earring injuries), enlarged earlobes. The goal of this procedure is to repair the earlobe, reposition and restore a normal appearance of the ears. In the majority of the cases, wearing heavy earrings and heavy jewellery induce damage to the earlobe.

What are the Conditions in which Lobuloplasty is Performed?

Sprawled, stretched or torn earlobes is a common problem both in males and females. In women, stretching or tearing may occur due to continuous and regular wearing heavy earrings and ear stretchers. Trauma is also a common cause of ear lobes damage.

What is the Procedure for Lobuloplasty?

Lobuloplasty is a relatively tolerable and comfortable procedure. Many patients tolerate this procedure quite easily as the pain and discomfort associated with it is minimum. Usually, the split and tear is repaired under local anaesthesia.

ENT surgeon excises torn skin edges and then stitches together fresh edges with sutures. The doctor then places pressure dressing. Sutures will remain in place for about a week. ENT doctor uses a piece of tape to cover the area for extra protection. The procedure helps in removing old scar tissue and repositioning the existing earlobe to create a natural look.

Benefits of Earlobe Repair

Earlobe repair can:

Restore a normal contour and natural appearance of the earlobe.

Restore the ability to wear earrings.

What to expect after Lobuloplasty?

Following Lobuloplasty, you will feel mild discomfort and pain for 2-3 days.

The doctor will advise you to use medication for pain for up to 2 to 3 days.

After Lobuloplasty, it is normal to experience ear swelling for up to 1-2 weeks.

ENT surgeon places dressing over the ears for up to 3 to 4 days. After a few days, the doctor removes the dressing and instructs the patient to wear a headband at night in order to keep the ears tucked in place. The patient can resume normal activities after one week’s time.

Final results will be seen within a few weeks to a few months, depending on individual healing capacity. Following Lobuloplasty, the incisions will gradually fade over time.
