Nosebleed

Nosebleed are common, they might be scary but they do not generally indicate any serious medical problem. The nose contains many blood vessels in the close vicinity in the front and back of the nose but they are very fragile and bleed easily.

Nosebleeds are common in children between the ages of 3 and 10 and in adults.

Two type of nosebleeds are there, one being the anterior nosebleed which occurs when the blood vessels in front nose break and bleed and the other type being the posterior nosebleed which occurs in the deepest or in back part of the nose.

Cause of Nosebleed:

There can be many causes of nosebleeds. Infrequent or sudden nosebleed is rarely serious whereas frequent nosebleeds can indicate a serious problem.

The most common cause of nosebleed is dry air. Using a central heating system and living in a dry climate can dry out the nasal membranes, this dryness can cause bleeding inside the nose.

Some of the medications for allergies, cold or sinus problem can also cause this dryness.

Common causes of nosebleeds include:

  • Chemical irritants
  • Allergic reaction
  • Foreign object stuck in the nose
  • Repeated sneezing
  • High blood pressure
  • Blood clotting disorder
  • Cancer
  • Upper respiratory infection

You should seek for medical attention if you are experiencing nosebleed longer than 20 minutes, or if this is occurring after an injury. It might be a sign of a posterior nosebleed, which can be serious.

Injuries that might be a cause for nosebleed include, fall, a car accident or a punch in the face. Nosebleed after an injury may indicate a skull fracture, broken nose or internal bleeding.

Treatment for Nosebleed:

Our doctor will conduct a physical examination to determine the cause of your nosebleed. There is generally no single test to determine the cause, tests include:

  • CBC (Complete blood count)
  • PTT (Partial thromboplastin time)
  • Nasal endoscopy
  • CT scan of the nose
  • X-ray of the nose and face

Depending on the type and cause of the nosebleed, treatment will vary. In case you are experiencing an anterior nose bleed, you can treat it at home by applying cold press over the bridge of your nose or use a nasal spray to close off the small vessels of blood.

Posterior nosebleeds should not be treated at home. This type of nosebleed is less common and often serious.

Visit us immediately if your nosebleed is not stopping, in that case you might be having a posterior nosebleed that require invasive treatment.

To stop persistent or frequent nosebleed a medical technique called cauterization can be used depending on your condition. This treatment involves our doctor burning the blood vessels in your nose with silver nitrate or a cautery ( Electric radiation to heat the object) to remove tissue.

If you think you are experiencing posterior nosebleed or if you can’t stop bleeding from anterior nosebleed, which can be serious problem. Contact us immediately.
