Nasal Polyps

Nasal polyps are the noncancerous growths of the mucosa or the lining tissues of your nose.

Causes of Nasal Polyps:

Inflamed tissue of the nasal mucosa is where nasal polyps grow, mucosa is a wet layer that protects the inside of your nose and humidifies the air that you breathe.

During an allergy induced irritation or infection, the nasal mucosa becomes red and swollen and it might produce fluid that drip out. With a long run irritation, the mucosa might form a polyp.

A polyp is like a small cyst, round growth that can block nasal passages. With no previous nasal problem some people might develop polyp, for developing polyp there is often a trigger, such triggers are:

  • Recurring or chronic sinus infections
  • Asthma
  • Hay fever
  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Chrug-Strauss syndrome
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs sensitivity

For some people to develop a polyp might be a hereditary tendency.

Symptoms of Nasal Polyps:

Nasal polyps are painless, soft growth inside the nasal passages, occurring in the area where the upper sinuses drain into your nose.

As polyp lack nerve sensation, you may not even know that you have one. Polyps are capable to grow enough to block the nasal passages, forming chronic congestion. Signs and symptoms might include:

  • Nose blocked sensation
  • Runny rose
  • Postnasal drip
  • Nasal stuffiness
  • Nasal congestion
  • Sense of smell reduced
  • Breathing through your mouth
  • A feeling of pressure in your face or forehead
  • Sleep apnea
  • Snoring

Headache or pain may also occur if there is a sinus infection with polyp.

Treatment for Nasal Polyps:

Our doctor will look up into your nasal passages with an instrument called nasal speculum to see nasal polyp.

The doctor may need to perform a nasal endoscopy if the polyp is deeper in your sinuses. This process involves passing a rigid thin tube with a camera and light at the end into your nasal passages.

In some cases an MRI or CT scan may be necessary to determine the exact location and size of the polyp. This test can also help in determining the medical seriousness such as cancerous growth or structural growth.

If your child is having nasal polyps, genetic diseases tests like cystic fibrosis might be necessary.

Medication which reduce inflammation might help in reducing the size of the polyp and relieve symptoms.

If your signs and symptoms are not improving by medications, surgery is the option for you to completely remove the polyps. The surgery type depends on the size of the polyp.

For polyps , our doctor can perform an endoscopic sinus surgery with a flexible, thin endoscope with a small tool and tiny camera on the end.

There is no external cut on nose , it’s a completely endoscopic procedure.

After surgery saline water and nasal spray can prevent the polyp from returning. Most symptoms get significantly better with surgical treatment.
