Ear Infections

An ear infection occurs when a bacterial or viral infection effects the middle of the ear, the section just behind the eardrum. Because of the inflammation and fluid build-up in the middle ear, ear infection can be painful.

Chronic ear infection can permanently cause damage to the inner and middle ear as they recur many times or either don’t clear up whereas acute ear infection is short in duration but painful.

What causes Ear Infection?

When one of your eustachian tubes in the middle ear becomes swollen or blocked, causing the fluid to build up, this how the ear infection occurs. Some of the common causes of ear infection includes:

  • Colds
  • Allergies
  • Sinus infections
  • Excess mucus
  • Smoking
  • Change in air pressure

In young children ear infection occurs most commonly as they have short and narrow eustachian tubes.

Symptoms of Ear Infection:

Symptoms of ear infections can be persistant or might come and go. You may experience symptoms in one or both ears. With double ear infection pain is usually more severe.

The common symptoms of ear infections include:

  • Discomfort or mild pain inside the ear
  • Feeling of persisting pressure inside the ear
  • Fussiness in infants
  • Hearing loss
  • Puss like ear drainage

Symptoms for chronic ear infections may be less noticeable than of acute ear infections.

Treatment for Ear Infection:

Our ENT specialist will examine your ears with the instrument called otoscope before beginning the treatment. This examination might reveal fluid draining from the middle ear, redness or puss like fluid inside the middle ear, collapsed or bulging eardrum and a perforation in the eardrum.

Without any intervention most mild ear infection clear up. In relieving the symptoms of mild ear infection some of the following methods might be effective:

  • Application of a warm clothe to the affected ear
  • Use prescribed ear drops to relieve pain

If your symptoms are not improving or getting worse, you should immediately schedule an appointment with us.

Our doctors might ask for a computed tomography (CT) scan of your head, in case the infection has spread beyond the middle ear.

If you are suffering from a chronic ear infection, doctors might advise you to have a hearing test.

In case your ear infection isn’t getting cured with usual medical treatments, surgery can be an option. Surgical removal of the adenoids may be necessary in case the ear infection involves enlarged adenoids.

Surgery often involves the placement of tubes inside the ear to drain out fluid.
